Tesco, Sainsbury and Morrisons could be short of own-label frozen and chilled desserts for a few weeks following a blaze at a Scottish supplier.
The fire at Aulds Foods’ Inchinnan factory, in Refrewshire, took firefighters 10 hours to put out, totally destroying the £6m premises, which employed 300 staff.
A spokesman said that certain lines only had days left of stock in storage. “The best-case scenario is that we will have our frozen production back up to capacity in two weeks,” he added.
Managing director Alan Marr is currently looking at alternative sites in the area to shift capacity to.
Production of bakery goods at the company’s other plants has not been affected, with fresh production transferred to its main Greenock site.
Aulds Food is one of Scotland’s largest independent bakery and food businesses, employing 900 staff and owning 44 shops.
The cause of the blaze, which started at 1.10am on Friday September 16, is still being investigated. Twelve night shift staff were evacuated safely from the premises.
