Kerrygold Lighter Softer
Launched: May 2009
A gold winner in The Grocer's Food & Drink Awards 2010, this is a healthier spread, with reduced fat and salt, that retains the taste of butter. Unlike other spreadable butters it doesn't use vegetable oil to soften it, instead using a heating and cooling process, although Kerry insists the amount of rain that falls on the grass eaten by Kerrygold's cows in Ireland also produces softer butter.

Kerrygold Lighter Softer comes in a 500g tub (rsp: £2.38) and is sold in Sainsbury's, Tesco, Morrisons, Asda and Waitrose.

Flora Pro-activ Buttery
Launched: June 2010 Fresh from getting the endorsement of the European Food Safety Authority for the cholesterol-lowering properties of Pro-activ's plant sterol ingredient, Flora is launching a version of its Pro-activ sub-brand that has a more buttery taste (rsp: £4.25).

The key target market for Pro-activ is older people concerned about their cholesterol intake and heart health; this group is also much more likely to be used to the taste of butter, hence the need to deliver a product that combines the active cholesterol-lowering effect with the taste they want.

Lurpak Unsalted Lighter
Launched: June 2010
This is the first spreadable product that combines low salt and lower fat into one Lurpak butter. "Our new Unsalted Lighter Spreadable variant (rsp: £2.58 for 500g) will be a success as there is a strong correlation between Lurpak Lighter and Lurpak Unsalted shoppers," says brand manager Charlotte Buswell.

"It made strong commercial sense to launch the Unsalted Lighter Spreadable, marrying the two shopper groups." Like the rest of the range, the product is free of additives, artificial colourings or preservatives.

Glenilen Farm HandMade Country Butter
Launched: June 2010
This butter is made by the Kingston family at their family farm in West Cork. This area near the south coast of Ireland is famous for its lush pastures, which are ideal for dairy farming and produce high-quality milk that gives Glenilen's products an authentic farmhouse taste. The milk is churned in the traditional manner.

At an rsp of £2.79 for 250g, it is made from sweet, lightly sea-salted cream and is handwrapped in parchment paper then brown paper and tied with twine to produce a home-made look.
