Crips 99 cals
Launched: July 2010
Derbyshire brand Crips, which makes low-fat oven-baked wheat and potato snacks, is hoping to take low-fat crisps to a new level (or new low, depending on how you look at it) with the launch of Crips 99 Cals. The 22.5g packs (rsp: 49p) contain just 99 calories lower than many low-fat variants and 70% less fat than traditional crisps.
They are available in three flavours: Thai sweet chilli, sea salt & balsamic vinegar, and mature Cheddar cheese & spring onion. Crips 99 Cals went on sale in 39 Tesco outlets in the East Midlands this month, with 68 Waitrose stores to follow in August.
Müller Stars
Launched: June 2010
Müller is looking to bridge the audience gap between toddlers' yoghurt Little Stars and Müller Corner with the launch of Müller Stars, a range aimed at four to eight-year-olds. The twin-pot 95g yoghurts were rolled out last month and come in single-flavour four-packs of strawberry, peach or blackcurrant (rsp: £1.58).
"Yoghurt is included in more than a third of lunchboxes for children under 10, so this is where the biggest immediate opportunity lies," says Müller Dairy marketing director Jonathan Dee. "When children are four, they don't want products they see as babyish."
Cathedral City with...
Launched: June 2010
After finding some shoppers were confused about what was in its Lunch Pack and Dip&Go! snacking packs, Dairy Crest has relaunched them as the Cathedral City with... snacking range. Cathedral City with... Crackers & Pickle (rsp: £1.72) and Cathedral City with Pickle (rsp: 98p) were launched last month.
"The new range has clear, on-pack communication and, together with Cathedral City's quality credentials, gives a stronger presence in-store and will enable us to appeal to a wider audience," says Dairy Crest head of marketing Laura Downey.
Dole Fruit Snack
Launched: May 2010
Dole thinks the novel packaging on its new snacks will prove a hit with children. The squeezable pouches were launched in May and are available in three flavours: apple; apple, banana & strawberry; and mango, apple, banana & passion fruit (rsp: £2 for four 90g pouches). The pouches feature a cap that is certified safe for children rather than a standard screw cap.
"Our new product is made from real fruit with nothing added, making it ideal for kids' lunchboxes and on-the-go snacking," says Dole packaged foods Europe sales director Harvey Aaron.
