Imports draw hostility but interest is up
Prejudice against imported meat, especially third country beef, is hardening following MAFF's disclosure of its suspicion illegally shipped product brought FMD to Britain.
Producer lobbyists led by the National Beef Association are shouting their predictable protectionist message, but talk in the wholesale trade is of increasing rather than declining commercial interest.
Volume demand from catering, foodservice and further processing is fading with more domestic beef available, but a significant core of customers preferring non-UK material can be attracted easily with offers from unfamiliar sources because they fear longstanding suppliers will be shut out.
