Former long-time Sainsbury’s brand director Judith Batchelar has joined the board of directors of low-sodium foodtech company MicroSalt.
Batchelar, who is currently the deputy chair of the UK Environment Agency and sits on UK Research & Innovation’s Natural Environment Research Council, has worked in the food & drink industry for over 35 years.
MicroSalt’s patented technology produces salt crystals that are approximately one hundred times smaller than typical table salt, with the micro-grains containing around 50% less sodium.
The US-based business also owns SaltMe, a brand of low-sodium, HFSS-compliant crisps currently available to buy on Amazon US and in multiple retailers across America.
The company signalled a goal of entering the UK market with Batchelar’s appointment.
“We are very excited to have Judith join our team,” said MicroSalt CEO Rick Guiney. “Her deep industry experience in improving the nutritional profile of foods will be enormously helpful with our go-to-market efforts in the UK.”
Batchelar was Sainsbury’s brand director for 17 years, overseeing all aspects of the retailer’s product offer.
Prior to that, she held a similar role at Safeway, as director of technical and product development, for just over three years.
Before that she spent 12 years in the food division at Marks & Spencer, and prior to that worked in manufacturing for Mars and Bass.
The food & drink heavy hitter, who is also a biochemist and nutritionist, was awarded an OBE in 2015 for services to farming and the food industry.
