France's own label market is unlikely ever to reach the levels enjoyed by British retailers, one of the giants of French grocery has warned.
Former Carrefour boss Paul Louis Halley said "great strides" had been taken in France with latest estimates putting sales of own label goods at more than 20% double the volumes 10 years ago.
But he admitted volumes were still "way behind" the 45%-plus levels in Britain and blamed the shortfall on France's continuing love affair with the hypermarket and customers continuing to demand a wide choice of branded goods.
