A new range of chilled gluten-free sweet and savoury pastries has been declared winner of the Great New Idea at the 2014 Food & Drink Expo.
Nottingham-based Riverside Bakery’s No G range scooped top place in the innovation award, which was voted for by visitors to the trade show at Birmingham’s NEC - and via Twitter.
No G launched at the show with seven products including pies, a frittata, a quiche and a chocolate and cherry tart, but is set to expand to 30 lines by Christmas.
“It was extremely hard to develop a pastry that tasted great and didn’t crack, but its success boils down to the strength of the product,” said the bakery’s account executive Sam Benjamin. “Visitors commented on the taste and quality of the product and our ethos in widening the choice for coeliacs.”
Riverside is part of the Pork Farms Group and supplies chilled quiches to the UK multiples.
The gluten-free range saw off competition for the award from 20 other suppliers, with runners-up including Trolley Bags’ reusable interlocking shopping bags, Zacely bubble tea kits, That Hungry Chef’s meat pickles (see digest, right) and ice cream brand Protein First.
Visitors also voted for a Great New Idea at sister event Farm Shop & Deli show, which was won by Yorkshire-based Fine Cheeses Ltd for its charcoal cheese. Runners-up included beetroot juice brand Bourne & Wallis, and Little Turban’s Apple Dhansak.
The Food & Drink Expo is organised by William Reed Business Media, publisher of The Grocer.
