Frozen pea prices could rocket next season following the sudden closure of the UK's biggest supplier.
Production ceased at Albert Fisher's frozen veg site at King's Lynn after receiver KPMG failed to find a buyer, leaving growers in the lurch weeks before the current pea crop was due for harvesting.
Transferring processing to other companies at short notice would be difficult if not impossible because of the way the supply chain is set up, warned the British Frozen Food Federation.
Buyers at the multiples said they had begun to make alternative arrangements for frozen veg supplies as soon as Albert Fisher called in the receivers.
