Ginsters is to have another crack at the ready meals market despite a failed foray into the sector earlier this year.
The company, which is best known for its quick-fix pasties, sandwiches and savoury snacks, is launching a boxed range of large, deep-filled hot pies.
The move follows the withdrawal of its World Food line which included Beef Lasagne, Sausage & Mash, Tomato & Mozarella Bake and Chicken Balti with Naan Bread which all had rsps of between £2.99 and £3.49.
A Ginsters spokeswoman said the first of its new 570g pies, rsp: £3.99, were due to hit Sainsbury's shelves on Wednesday (October 17).
Chicken and Mushroom and Peppered Steak will go on sale in 250 Sainsbury's stores.
A Steak and Ale variant will be introduced to the range (all rsp: £3.99) early next year.
"We consider this to be in a different category to World Food," she added.
"The pies are a premium meal solution to be accompanied by fresh vegetables."
Joss Davidge, head of marketing, said the company had a reputation for wholesome pies and pastry products and had developed the range in response to consumer demand for traditional home-baked pies.
"The new range will strengthen our position in the marketplace," he added.
