The Glenmorangie Company is making a “multimillion-pound” investment into its strongly smoky Scotch brand Ardbeg.
The move will see the distillery in Islay, Scotland, gain a new still house. with an additional four copper stills that will allow it to significantly ramp up production. The company has submitted planning permission for the development, and is eyeing 2019 for completion.
It would “pave the way for future generations of smoky malt whisky lovers to discover the ultimate Islay malt” said Glenmorangie CEO Marc Hoellinger.
Ardbeg has distilled whisky at its Islay home since 1815. It dramatically reduced production in the 1980s before being bought and fully reopened in 1997 by Glenmorangie. Since then, the brand had achieved steady year-on-year growth, it said.
