Today’s member Gold Star has closed its C&C depot in Harrow to focus exclusively on delivered wholesale.
The move was prompted by how highly competitive the C&C market had become, said owner Vijay Thanwani.
Gold Star will now focus on developing its specialised delivered operation, which it began to trial in 2013.
Gold Star Wholesale will deliver bulk, full-pallet orders from a nearby depot, with help from a third-party logistics company. It took over the Harrow depot in 2010 after the insolvency of former owner Premier Wholesale (UK). Gold Star is now set to rent out the property to a timber business from the beginning of next month.
“Particularly in London, the market is very saturated with cash & carry depots; there is one on every corner and another one on the corner after that,” said Thanwani.
“There is a niche market for a more specialised service and that is where we can fit in.”
In its latest accounts filed on Companies House, Gold Star posted a 171% jump in pre-tax profits to £32,291 for the year ending 30 April 2015, on sales up 0.6% to £14.8m.
