Graham’s the Family Dairy has launched a new range of Icelandic-style skyr yoghurts, with listings in Aldi and Sainsbury’s stores in Scotland.
Its range began rolling out from 11 January in natural, strawberry, passion fruit and mango & papaya (rsp: £1.59/450g). A lemon SKU is also available in Aldi, while a Victoria plum flavour is yet to secure retail listings.
The fat-free range claims high protein content with up to 12.2g per 450g pot. The cultured milk products were made with skimmed milk and had nutritional properties similar to Greek yoghurt, Graham’s said.
“Product development is always high on our agenda,” said Graham’s MD Robert Graham. “We’re glad to be launching the first skyr produced in Scotland. We plan to expand our reach throughout the UK in the coming months and I’m excited to hear feedback from our customers across the country.”
The brand’s new skyr lineup will challenge MS Iceland’s Ísey Skyr brand, which launched into UK Aldi stores in October. The Icelandic dairy co-op has clashed with Arla on a number of occasions over its use of the term ‘skyr’ to describe its German-made product, running a 2015 campaign mocking its authenticity.
It comes as Graham’s reiterated its intention to develop a £20m+ national dairy centre in Stirlingshire. If approved, it could process up to 350 million litres of milk per year and create 450 jobs, the dairy claimed. The new facility would also have the capabilities to “accelerate” research and development of new and added value products, added Robert Graham.
The supplier, in partnership with construction group McTaggart & Mickel, currently has a planning application under consideration of Scottish ministers to build a 600 home development to accompany its proposed 150,000 sq ft dairy centre.
