Grind will open at St Michael’s in Manchester, a development owned by former professional footballer Gary Neville.

Coffee challenger Grind is to expand beyond London for the first time, with the opening of a new café in Manchester.

The new site, located at St Michael’s development near Deansgate, is set to open this summer, in what the brand is calling a “major milestone” in its UK growth ambitions.

Grind’s first northern café will add to its 11 London sites, three takeaway trucks and coffee roastery. The “all-day café” will serve Grind coffees and fresh and seasonal brunches, as well as cocktails.

“We’ve always said that if we were to do a big site outside of London, the first place we would go would be Manchester,” said Grind CEO and founder David Abrahamovitch.

“My wife is Mancunian and her whole family live in Manchester, so I’ve spent a lot of time there over the years and I’ve always thought that a Grind would work well.”

Since its foundation in 2011, Grind has built a DTC business alongside its café estate.

The brand launched into retail with Waitrose in 2023, and has since gained listings with Co-op and Ocado, and acts as an own label supplier for M&S. In February, it moved into matcha tea, with a new collection of ceremonial grade tea for DTC shoppers.

St Michael’s is a commercial development owned by Relentless Developments, the property company owned by former professional footballer Gary Neville.

“The ambition for St Michael’s was to create a landmark that will become an economic driver for Manchester and bring together major names in a world-class, sustainable development,” Neville said.

“Attracting brands like Grind who have yet to set foot outside the capital is a massive achievement and testament to how hard we’ve been working to deliver our vision for the scheme and city as a whole.”
