In a week of fierce competition and pricing activity, Asda regained the cheapest retailer title by a narrow margin with a £51.21 basket that cost just 16p less than Morrisons.
The retailer provided 22 of the cheapest or joint-cheapest items and made price cuts on Branston Pickle by 1p, Evian by 2p, Radox Herbal Bath by 3p, Wall’s Magnum Classic by 4p and Quilted Velvet by 5p. Meanwhile, it hiked up the price of Doritos by 10p, McVitie’s Jaffa Cakes by 11p and Hardys Stamp Semillon Chardonnay by 3p.
Eight reductions were not enough for Morrisons to secure first place, but it did jump a place to come second and provide 14 of the cheapest or joint-cheapest items. The retailer cut Doritos and Wall’s Magnum Classic by 1p, Evian and Radox by 2p, Ambrosia Creamed Rice by 4p, Quilted Velvet by 5p, pork chops by £1.27 and slashed Semillon Chardonnay by £2.19. It also put up bananas by 4p and sweet potatoes by 40p.
Four price hikes resulted in Tesco slipping from first place last week to third place. It provided 20 of the cheapest or joint-cheapest items, but added 21p to the price of fresh penne pasta and 4p to bananas. Promotions ending resulted in a 49p hike on Doritos and 11p on McVite’s Jaffa Cakes. It made 1p cuts to cauliflower, sausage rolls and Ambrosia Creamed Rice and reduced sweet potatoes by 40p.
Sainsbury's maintained its second-most-expensive status with a £55.01 basket. It upped the price of bananas by 4p, organic cherry tomatoes by 9p and fresh penne pasta by 21p. The Chicken Dippers were also up £1.58 due to the end of a three-week promotion. The retailer cut the price of Evian and Wall’s Magnums by 4p, Quilted Velvet by 6p and pork chops by 17p per kg.
With a basket £9.35 more expensive than Asda’s, Waitrose remained in fifth place. It upped white seedless grapes by 50p and wholemeal pitta bread by 2p, but reduced carrots and Müller Fruit Corner both by 1p. Promotions cut apples 15p and sausage rolls 20p.
