Despite being the only retailer to offer no price-based promotions, Morrisons reclaimed first place this week with a basket costing £2.04 less than its closest rival's. Its Malibu rum was by far the cheapest, at £10.67, helped by an ongoing promotion.
Sainsbury's climbed two places this week, offering as many cheapest items (4) as Morrisons but fewer promotions. Sainsbury's basket also showed the greatest saving compared with last week, helped by its cheapest cumin seeds (56p), king prawns (£1.99), and Birds Eye Chicken Dippers (£2).
Tesco offered the most items on promotion this week (12) more than a third of its basket. The retailer was also the cheapest on five products, including the facial wipes (52p), lemons (25p), and Hovis loaf (75p).
Despite having the greatest number of cheapest items (7), Asda found itself in the bottom half of the leader board for the first time since the beginning of The Grocer 33 year, with a basket costing £3.16 more than Morrisons.
With a basket price of £69.55 over £10 more expensive than fourth-placed Asda's Waitrose remained fifth. Its spring onions were the cheapest (42p) but its king prawns cost more than twice as much as those offered by any of its rivals (£4.59).
