Morrisons offered the cheapest basket this week, and was £1.20 cheaper than its nearest rival. It offered the most cheapest items (6) and the best saving on the previous week. It was helped along by 11 promotions including a £1.80 discount on White Zinfandel and half-price Ben & Jerry's.

Asda's nine promotions helped it climb a place to come second. It offered four cheapest items, three of which were on promotion (the shortcrust steak pie, McVitie's Jamaica ginger cake and the Old El Paso dinner kit).

Last week's winner Tesco fell two places to come third. It offered two of the cheapest items (the stewing steak and pineapple) and had six items on promotion. Its Old El Paso dinner kit was more expensive than at Waitrose.

The frozen prawns, cheese feast pizza and pack of four baking potatoes were cheapest at Sainsbury's but the retailer also made the largest price hike. Four prices went up, with the basket ending up £1.96 more expensive than last week.

Waitrose's basket was the only one to cost more than £60 and failed to offer any cheapest items with 200g frozen prawns that cost more than twice as much as at any of its rivals (£4.59). Waitrose took fifth place with a basket costing £12.64 more than Morrisons'.
