Organic yoghurt maker Rachel’s has been snapped up by French dairy producer Groupe Lactalis.

The deal, for an undisclosed sum, comes after reports first surfaced in May that US owner Dean Foods was looking to sell the business. A bid by Welsh dairy co-operative Calon Wen was reportedly knocked back last month.

Dean said it was “business as usual” for the Aberystwyth-based company following the sale. Rachel’s employs around 140 people and boasts annual sales of £30m.

“This transaction allows Dean Foods to grow the core elements of its portfolio that will yield the greatest return for shareholders,” the company said in a statement.

“Rachel’s is a premium yogurt brand that carries a rich history and strong brand equity as the second-largest organic dairy brand in the UK. It remains business as usual.”
