Raspberry growers are hoping new varieties will help them capitalise on impressive sales growth last year. Volume sales rose 6.3%, with the category now worth £139m [Nielsen].
New Zealand varieties Korpiko and Tadmor are currently being trialled in the UK by Hargreaves Plants.
Korpiko produces large, conical fruit and is said to be juicy with good acid balance, while Tadmor has red or orange berries and is considered to be similar in flavour to the more common Tulameen variety.
Tadmor do not darken after picking and have more than four days' shelf life.
Korpiko will be available in stores from this summer, with Tadmor available in trial quantities.
"The new varieties offer excellent eating quality and flavour, as well as better profitability for the grower because of yield and harvesting improvements," said Hargreaves product manager Jamie Petchell.
