Guinness UDV is gearing up to take over the sales and marketing of Captain Morgan rum in the UK even though the brand's ownership remains in doubt. It is one of the key UK brands in the Seagram portfolio due to be split between Diageo and Pernod Ricard when the US regulators give the takeover final approval.
Allied Domecq maintains it will have the rights to Captain Morgan through a deal it struck with the brand's Puerto Rican distiller Distileria Serralles. The dispute is now going through the courts.
Guinness UDV md Don Goulding said even though this remains unresolved, it will handle the brand once the Seagram sale is approved.
