The Heart of England Co-op has chosen Ali Kurji as chief executive, succeeding Richard Samson who left to take up the same role at Ipswich and Norwich Co-op.
Kurji will be responsible for overseeing the society’s food retail stores, totalling 12 Foodcentres and 23 Lateshops across Coventry, Warwickshire and south Leicestershire. He will also oversee the group’s other divisions, such as its funerals and travelcare businesses.
Kurji joined Heart of England Co-op in its former incarnation as the Coventry and District Co-operative Society in 1982.
He rose from management accountant to accountant, general manager (finance), financial controller and secretary and finally deputy chief executive and secretary before his latest role.
Kurji said: “The society is in a sound financial state and we hope to build further profitable expansion of our business activities on the foundations already laid in recent years.”
