Heineken will add Jamaican lager Red Stripe to its UK portfolio from 1 January, after the supplier acquired the brand from Diageo in a $780m (£523m) deal.
The acquisition of Red Stripe maker Desnoes & Geddes also includes Dragon Stout. The two beers join brands including Kronenbourg, Heineken, Desperados and Birra Moretti in Heineken’s premium lager portfolio.
“We are hugely excited about Red Stripe joining our premium beer portfolio,” said Heineken UK MD David Forde. “The beer has a rich heritage - from its links with music through the decades, to its famous cans and stubby bottles. Red Stripe brings with it a wealth of opportunities for our customers which we will support through brand investment and innovation.”
Red Stripe’s sales were up 1% this year to £17.3m [Nielsen 52 w/e 10 October 2015].
