Former Heinz UK & Ireland MD Stefan Barden has been appointed director of Northern Foods’ chilled division.
Barden, who took up his role on Monday (January 30), became MD of Heinz in September 2003. Last year he moved on to a new assignment in Heinz focusing on strategy (The Grocer, May 14, p19).
At Heinz his major projects included the introduction of customised ranges and pack sizes for convenience retailers and the launch of a policy to reduce salt in all products.
Prior to becoming MD, Barden was category director of European sauces. He has also worked as category manager for grocery at Iceland, as category manager for Unilever and as a consultant to McKinsey.
A spokeswoman for Northern Foods said that Barden was replacing Steve Crossley in the role. Northern Foods is currently in discussions with Crossley about his future, she added.
Toby Hobson, chairman of Northern Foods, said: “I am delighted to welcome Stefan to the board of Northern Foods.
“Stefan’s wide experience of the food and retailing sectors and his proven success in delivering strategic change programmes will be invaluable to us here.”
According to Northern Foods, its chilled division is its largest operating division, with a turnover of £765m and nearly 12,000 employees across 15 UK sites.
Parfetts Cash & Carry has appointed David Grimes as finance director. Grimes, who is currently deputy general manager at Parfetts’ depot in Sheffield, replaces Robert Miller who is standing down from the position but will remain at Parfetts.
Sports supplement supplier Bio-synergy, which has products in all the multiples, has made Emma Goldstein NPD and marketing manager. Goldstein was previously an NPD manager for Kinnerton Confectionery and a category manager for M&S.

Rupert Berkmann has been elected as a director for wine wholesaler Berkmann Wine Cellars. Berkmann is the son of the company’s chairman Joseph Berkmann, and recently worked in Australia with Negociants International, the export arm of the Australian wine company Yalumba.
