Northern Irish Spar wholesaler Henderson is investing £26m in its company-owned store estate over the next 12 months.
The investment will include £17m on nine new-build stores and £9m for six Spar and Eurospar refurbishments, for which it has secured planning permission.
The first of the new-build stores opened last week on Sunnyside Street in Belfast.
The 3,014 sq ft store has 20 bays dedicated to 600 locally sourced fresh food products.
The £2m store also has an in-store bakery, Hendersons’ Daily Deli food-to-go counter and a Barista Bar counter.
“With this continued investment, we’re able to provide local employment opportunities and serve the needs of local communities with enhanced shopper experiences thanks to innovative in-store services and facilities,” said Henderson Group property director Mark Adrain.
The 20 new stores will add to the network of 87 Spar and Eurospar stores that Henderson Retail owns in the province.
