St Peter's Brewery is riding a wave of interest in speciality beers with the introduction of King Cnut Ale.
This is an unhopped beer based on the way beers were made 1,000 years ago. It is the same recipe the Suffolk micro brewer used for its Millennium Ale but with the abv reduced from 7% to 5%.
MD George Wortley said: "The Millennium Ale was very successful but we could not go on calling it that and it was not viable to continue brewing it at the same strength."
The beer was launched in its cask format at the Peterborough Beer Festival this week and will go on sale exclusively in Safeway from Monday. It will be supported with gondola ends and shelf talkers. Rsp: £1.69.
Wortley believed it was the first commercially available unhopped beer to be produced for two centuries. The beer has a wide range of ingredients including fruit, roasted barley and stinging nettles. Hops were not included because they were not introduced to this country until the 15th century.
