The snacks come three years after HipChips opened on Old Compton Street

London café HipChips is to make its grocery debut with a brace of artisanal snacks exclusive to Sainsbury’s.

The packs of handmade potato crisps with a trio of dips (rsp: £4.99/250g) will be available from 9 April in 109 Sainsbury’s stores.

Savoury comprises crisps dusted with sea salt, Moroccan-style yoghurt, beetroot, ginger & chilli dip and katsu dip, while Sweet’s crisps are dusted with cinnamon sugar and come with salted caramel, passion fruit and chocolate dips. The latter variant was “the first sweet crisp and dip offering in the UK” HipChips said.

Designed to be ambient, the two products will be ranged in Sainsbury’s bagged snacks aisle. They come three years after HipChips opened on Old Compton Street, serving handmade crisps made from seven varieties of potato, and 14 savoury and sweet dips. Prices start at £4.95.

“The question I am most frequently asked is ‘When are you opening near me?’,” said the café’s general manger, Tim Sutton. “So now we are proud to be bringing the HipChips experience to consumers across the UK.”

The bagged snacks category’s value reached £2,990.2m last year as an extra £155.2m worth of crisps, popcorn and nuts went through grocery tills – with sales led by larger packs [Nielsen 52 w/e 8 September 2018].
