A Nordic supplier is launching a range of high-protein, meat-based bagged snacks pitched as an alternative to crisps.
HK Scan, which supplies products including meatballs in the UK, has this month launched a four-strong range of bagged snacks sold in 40g single-serve bags (rsp: £1.99). They mark the UK debut of the supplier’s Flodins brand, under which it sells meat snacks to a range of export markets.
Two products – Pepper & Beef Snacks and Smoky Chicken Snacks – are described as jerky-style lines, while the other two – Crispy Chicken Chips and Crispy Pork Chips – were industry firsts, claimed the supplier. The Chips are thinly sliced pieces of meat that are dried and seasoned, and have a similar texture to crisps, said HK Scan UK MD Janek Kalbin. “We are very hopeful for the UK market with our Chips as crisp consumption is very high,” he added.
All the snacks – which are manufactured in Estonia and made their debut in Finland and Sweden earlier this year – would tap into the growing demand for high-protein products, said Kalbin. Each 100g of the dried snacks was made from more than 230g of fresh meat.
“There is growing demand for meat snacks, with significant growth in Europe,” he added. “The UK is following the trend, with consumer demand for high-protein meat snacks that can be eaten as an alternative to crisps and other traditional snack options.”
The Flodins lines have just rolled out to Nisa stores, and will be stocked by Ocado from mid-December. HK Scan said the products would allow it to tap a wider retail base than its current UK range, and would look to potential stockists including forecourts and sports centres.
Marketing for the range will include social media in addition to a sampling campaign.
