Several of the grocery industry’s leading lights have been recognised for their efforts in the New Year Honours List.
Among the most high profile recipients is Alf Carr, director general of the British Frozen Food Federation, who picked up an OBE.
Carr received the award for services to the food industry and in particular his efforts in championing the cause of frozen food manufacturers.
The category has been under pressure for the past few years as a result of supermarket promotional strategies and a perception among consumers that frozen food is not as high quality as chilled. Carr said: “It is a great honour for me but also a tangible recognition of the standing of BFFF in political and regulatory areas of influence.”
The growing significance of Fairtrade was also recognised as Harriet Lamb, executive director of the Fairtrade Foundation, was awarded a CBE.
Lamb said: “This award will further boost our determination to realise our vision of a Fairtrade lifestyle for the public here and a better lifestyle for farmers and workers in Africa, Asia and Latin America.”
On the retail side, Pauline Kelly, a people manager with Asda, was given an OBE for services to the Department of Work and Pensions and to the retail industry.
The largest number of awards to people in the food industry went to those involved in agriculture. Among these were an OBE for Peredur Hughes, president of the National Farmers’ Union Cymru. There was also an OBE for Francis Walker, chair of the British Potato Council, while Neil Davidson, former vice president of Dairy UK, was awarded a CBE.
