Iceland has rolled out two new ranges of pizza produced in Italy.
Available in stores now, the line-up contains seven pizzas across two ranges – Pala and Sour Dough (rsp: £1.79) – and is designed to tap demand for pizza during the Rugby World Cup, which kicks off on 18 September.
The Pala range (‘pala’ is an Italian name for a stone pizza oven) comprises three pizzas: salami picante with sweet peppers; rocket pesto & grilled veg; and ham, mushroom & mascarpone cheese. Shaped to resemble the wooden paddle used to take pizzas out of an oven, they are made in the village of Visso, in the Sibillini Mountains.
The sourdough pizzas are made in the Dolomites by a family-run business and comprise four variants: margherita; salami; goats cheese & pesto; and spinach & nduja. Iceland said ingredients include flour milled in the local village and mineral-rich mountain water.
“We have responded to customer demand and produced what we believe to be exceptional and exciting additions to our existing awardwinning pizza ranges,” said Iceland joint MD Nigel Broadhurst.
Frozen pizzas outperformed chilled last year, with volume sales up 3.1% year on year versus 1.8% for chilled [Kantar Worldpanel 52 w/e 9 November 2014].
