IGD is to help 46 junior managers at Sainsbury to widen their horizons from the day to day running of the grocery industry through its Foundation Certificate in Management programme.
Sainsbury has enrolled the delegates on the Manchester Metropolitan University accredited course to give them a grounding in the wider issues facing the food industry.
The course is geared towards junior managers and others new to the food and grocery industry, and aims to provide knowledge and skills to help career development. It comprises five one-day workshops, each giving students an assignment and a project that applies the course work to the individual's workplace.
They are run by tutors with experience of working in the grocery industry. The Sainsbury delegates, who begin their course this month, are junior managers based in stores, head office and distribution centres nationwide.
Their jobs range from assistant manager trading, customer service or stock control manager. Cash prizes and a trophy will be awarded to the most outstanding members of the course which will be presented at IGD's annual Food Industry Awards, to be held this year on Tuesday (October 9) in London.
Jackie Watson, director in human resources talent for Sainsbury, said: "We are delighted to be able to offer our aspiring junior managers the opportunity to take part in this IGD training course. It is important that future senior managers are exposed to the key issues in the wider trading environment, enabling them to think outside of their day to day roles."
