No HP revolt
Heinz has said there has not been a downturn in HP Sauce sales following calls from Clare Short, a Birmingham MP and former secretary of state for international development, to boycott the product. Short called for the boycott after Heinz this week said it was considering closing its HP Foods factory in Aston Cross, Birmingham, and transferring production to Holland.
Success for asda
Some 15 businesses in Huntly, Aberdeenshire, have signed up to Asda's Collect and Save scheme ahead of an Asda store opening in the town on Monday (May 15). The scheme involves shoppers receiving a £5 George voucher when they spend £25 in the participating stores and £25 at Asda within a four-week period.
Retailer in top 30
Tesco has been named as one of the fastest-growing top five international grocery retailers. The Top 30 Grocery Retailers Worldwide, by Planet Retail, ranked Tesco fourth behind US retail giant Wal-Mart, France's Carrefour and Germany's Metro Group, with sales growth of 14% in 2005. Sainsbury was ranked number 26, while Morrisons was 30th.
Mosquito signing
Security system manufacturer Cooper-Menvier has signed a global deal to manufacture and distribute the Mosquito security system, a gadget that gives youths hanging outside shops an earful of ultrasonic soundwaves. The £495 unit encourages youths to move on by emitting a whine only audible to under-20s.
Tesco coffee deal
Tesco has linked up with Costa Coffee to install its coffee shops across a number of stores. The trial will involve branded standalone Costa Coffee shops being put in Tesco stores in St Ives, Kensington and Hove between now and July 2006.
