Canned strawberries turn dull brown
Research linking hyperactivity in children to food colouring has led to a change in specification for canned strawberries. Spain, a major supplier, is switching from Allurer red to an elderberry extract, thus meeting retailer requirements for not using artificial additives. Importers say the product will be totally different in appearance, a dull brown rather than the more familiar bright red. If retailers follow a similar stance with fruit cocktail, it will no longer have red cherries but white ones as the natural colour is lost in processing.
