Tesco is rolling out an advanced electronic tagging system in a move to boost on-shelf availability and security.
The retailer has signed a deal with Checkpoint Systems to install the Evolve Eco technology in 900 of its stores, including Extras, supermarkets and Metros by Christmas, following successful trials in its Express format.
Evolve Eco does away with physical tags on products and alerts security staff if customers try to leave the store without paying for the product.
It replaces the existing acousto-magnetic technology used by Tesco with invisible labels to tag products. The labels will initially be used on meat and health & beauty products, but are intended to be expanded across all categories.
The move would enable Tesco to increase the volume of high-value goods it puts on shelf.
“We’re trying to increase shelf availability and open up merchandising in store,” said Russell Holland, UK sales director for Checkpoint.
