Dublin fruit and vegetable grower Keelings is aiming to reduce Ireland’s dependency on imported peppers.
More than 95% of the peppers sold in the Republic are currently imported.
The family-owned business has launched a €10m pepper-growing venture at its north Dublin farm centre, which will produce some 1,500 tonnes of peppers a year.
Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, who represents the area in the Irish parliament, turned up to lend official support to a project that will trim a few million euros off the country’s imports bill.
According to David Keeling, MD of Keelings Farm, the peppers market is worth €30m in the Republic, and is growing by 20% a year.
