Tesco has come under fire in the Irish Republic for using petrol as a loss leader and driving an independent forecourt out of business.
The Society of the Irish Motor Industry, which has campaigned unsuccessfully against Tesco's foray into fuel retailing in the Republic, claimed Tesco's cut-price fuel had driven a Killarney independent out of business, and predicted others would follow.
Tesco opened its first forecourt at its Killarney store in February, and aims to develop up to 20 more in coming years.
Society spokesman Cyril McHugh urged planners "to learn the lesson of Killarney". Otherwise, he warned, motorists in rural Ireland could soon be facing a 50-mile drive to find a filling station.
