Country Crest, the leading potato prepacking business in Ireland, has made a major investment to increase its clout in onions.
The move will grow the supply base from 300 to 3,000 tonnes and is backed by a €2m spend on new facilities to supply Tesco Ireland at Lusk, Co Dublin. Grading and storage are to be improved further.
The company will also work with a pilot group of producers on a growing programme that will emulate its work with its dedicated potato grower base.
Paul Merrins, head of fresh produce at Tesco Ireland, said: “Tesco Ireland is fully committed to sourcing local produce.”
