The Irish pork scare, which led to all Irish pork being pulled from shelves at the weekend, has spread to beef, Ireland’s Food Safety Authority has confirmed.
On Saturday, Irish pork products were recalled amid fears they could have been contaminated with dioxins.
The FSAI yesterday revealed feed contaminated with dioxins has been fed to some cattle in Ireland but after evaluating samples taken from affected herds, there was no public health concern.
The UK’s Food Standards Agency moved to reassure consumers there was little health risk.
“We would expect that the risk from dioxin in beef is significantly lower than in pork,” said FSA chief scientist Dr Andrew Wadge.
“Cattle consume a wider variety of feeds and the way their bodies process the feed is different which makes the risk of contamination much lower. The risk to UK consumers remains very low.”
