Joseph Heler is making a move into the whey market with a £750,000 investment in a new facility at its Cheshire site.

The whey plant is a joint venture with dairy nutrition business, Volac - currently Heler’s biggest customer for whey, which Heler produces as a byproduct of its cheesemaking.

“Not only are we now able to create highly advanced, waste-reducing byproducts but we are improving returns, allowing us to pay a competitive milk price to our farmer suppliers,” said MD Mike Heler.

Heler expects to start supplying whey to customers at the end of this month. Earlier this month, Volac launched a new whey-based drink called Upbeat.
