Cheshire cheesemaker Joseph Heler has acquired North Wales-based cheese business Futura Foods Wales for an undisclosed sum.
Futura Foods Wales is based in Minffordd in Gwynedd and currently employs 60 people. It specialises in the cutting, blending and packing of multiple cheese formats and is both BRC AA accredited and Red Tractor certified.
The Minffordd factory was acquired by Gloucestershire-based parent company Futura Foods – which describes itself as one of the largest suppliers of Continental cheese to the UK and Ireland – in 2019, after previous owner the GRH Food Company fell into administration.
GRH had moved to the £6.5m factory in 2017, but following its closure two years later, its administrators said it had seen a “squeeze of increased costs and liabilities” which put “too much pressure on its finances”.
KPMG joint administrator Paul Dumbell subsequently said the 2019 acquisition by Futura provided a “significant opportunity to revive a major employer in Snowdonia and continue a proud history of Welsh cheese manufacturing”.
Following its purchase of the factory, Eatlean owner Joseph Heler said the business was “a fantastic site with huge potential”.
It is currently working with cheddars, mozzarella, territorials and Continental cheeses, with the transaction meaning Joseph Heler would continue to supply Futura’s customers and conduct business as usual, it added.
The business “offers the Joseph Heler customer base increased capability and capacity across all cheese formats”, said Joseph Heler MD George Heler.
“In addition, we have further capability investments planned for this year securing a really positive future for current employees and future employees in the area.”
