Sainsbury is speeding up its logistics overhaul with a revamp of its lorry fleet, and is also considering the introduction of RFID tagging.
Supply chain director Lawrence Christensen told The Grocer that in 12 months’ time he believed Sainsbury would be ready to begin the trialling of tray tagging.
“I’m a great fan of RFID and it will come to Sainsbury. It’s pointless at the moment, but a year down the line we’d look to start with it in areas such as tray tracking within our fresh food operations.
“We want to be there at the right time, know which way the industry is going and be sure we’re not left with a system that no one else wants.
“We don’t want to do a Betamax,” he added.
Sainsbury is also replacing 115 of its lorry fleet from next month with more efficient, state-of-the-art Man and Daf vehicles.
The multi-temperature trailers will be used throughout the UK to carry frozen, chilled and ambient goods.
They will also be the first vehicles to carry the new Sainsbury livery and slogan, Try something new today.
Asda has slashed the price of 40 board games. Asda claimed that the pre-Christmas price cuts mean its range is 30% cheaper than at Woolworths, Argos and Toys “R” Us.
Fredericks Dairies is investing £10m in a new production facility in Lancashire. The site will have Europe’s largest and most automated production line, capable of producing over 16,000 tubs every hour.
Dry pet food manufacturer Cambrian Pet Foods has completed a two-year, £3m expansion. MD David Davies, said this gave it the production and packing capacity to boost its presence as a supplier of premium-quality branded and own-label petfood.

Scottish c-store chain David Sands has completed the roll out of VoiteQ’s EPoS solution to all 18 c-stores. The system provides it with full stock control at branch level and complete central control of products and pricing.
Convenience foods producer Greencore has acquired the specialist sandwich manufacturer Oldfields. Greencore said that the acquisition of the company would widen its customer base into coffee shops and specialist foodservice.
