A cost-savings project carried out by Sainsbury and business improvement company Cobalt was highly commended at the national 2003 Management Consultancy Awards.
The three-year cost savings project, started in 1999, was expected to deliver savings of £300m and formed part of JS's overall corporate savings target of £600m by April 2004.
However, the performance of the Cobalt project, described by Sainsbury's director for trading support Martin Webb as "a huge success", enabled Sainsbury to raise its overall corporate savings target to £700m.
The Cobalt project included a number of packaging initiatives, including the introduction of efficient labelling techniques for bottles, milk cartons and egg boxes, and a cost-effective design change for own label toilet rolls.
Sainsbury and Cobalt won the accolade, organised by The Guardian newspaper and the Management Consultancies Association, in the production and services management category.
