Sainsbury is losing its non food and ambient trading director to Tesco.
James McCann was "attracted by Tesco's growing international business and the opportunities it offers someone of his background", said a Tesco spokeswoman.
She added that Tesco wanted the former Mars Moscow sales director, who also spent two years with Shell UK, to start an induction in January in the Tesco international division.
But Sainsbury assistant md Stuart Mitchell told the Grocer: "We accept James' resignation with regret. He will remain on our payroll, and available to Sainsbury, during his six-month contractual notice period."
