Just Eat’s burgeoning grocery operation can now reach more than 60% of the UK population, The Grocer can exclusively reveal.
Since launching its on-demand grocery offering in January, the delivery company has expanded from just 20 sites to more than 1,500. Some 450 have been added since July in a summer period of “rapid growth” the company said.
While Just Eat’s rivals Deliveroo and Uber Eat secured deals with supermarkets and convenience chains early on in the pandemic, it wasn’t until December 2021 that Just Eat announced a partnership with One Stop to offer a range of 500 products from 40 stores. January saw the start of its Asda trial, with 1,000 SKUs offered from five stores.
The move into grocery had long been ruled out by the CEO of Just Eat Takeaway.com (JET), Jitse Groen, who had bemoaned that “the [grocery] opportunity is relatively small” and that “there are no margins on grocery”. But in March, Just Eat Takeaway chief operating officer Jörg Gerbig told The Grocer that while it had been “late to the party” in grocery, its focus was on rolling out with major partners in the UK.
As well as Asda and One Stop, Just Eat has also partnered with Central England Co-op and Booker Wholesale, giving operators of Londis, Premier, Budgens and Family Shopper stores the option to tap Just Eat’s 18 million-strong customer base.
“Just Eat’s grocery offering is going from strength to strength,” said Amy Heather, director of strategic partnerships at Just Eat. “We’ve demonstrated to our partners the huge value we can provide with on-demand delivery and it’s amazing to see us expand so quickly. Since launching earlier this year, we’ve seen more and more of our customers relying on grocery delivery to support them in their busy lives.”
Just Eat told The Grocer it currently offered more than 2,000 grocery products to its users. Milk remains the most popular item on the platform.
“This is only the beginning and I look forward to announcing future big moves in this space to expand our grocery offering even further,” Heather said.
Globally, Just Eat Takeaway.com supports around 25,000 grocery and convenience stores on its platforms, including partnerships with brands such as Spar, Albert Heijn (Ahold), Shell, 7-Eleven, Marqt, Plus, Pascual Group, Galp, Kibus, Taste of America, Delicatessen Argentina, The Beer Store and Lieferando Express.
