The snacks, available in Honey and Strawberry, will hit Morrisons on 17 March

Healthy snacking brand Kallo has claimed a category first with the launch of a range of puffed oat cakes.

Two sweet variants – Honey 118g and Strawberry 122g (rsp: £2.99) – will roll into Morrisons stores nationwide on 17 March.

The “light”, “crunchy” snacks are manufactured using the same technique as rice cakes, puffing oats rather than rice.

Billed as a “healthier alternative to cereal bars and biscuits”, they are gluten-free and high in fibre, providing 37 calories per cake.

“No one has ever puffed an oat in this format before, so it’s been an incredible journey from our initial testing phase to launching Kallo Puffed Oat Cakes,” said Kallo brand controller Jackie Wilson.

“As a leader in rice cakes, we wanted to apply our expertise in puffed ingredients to a new snacking segment.

“While our most recent snack innovation, Kallo Veggie Cakes, offer a nutritious savoury option, Kallo Oat Cakes provide a wholesome sweet snack. They’re a feel-good solution for breakfast or mid-morning snacking, offering a unique alternative to breakfast biscuits and cereal bars,” Wilson added.

It comes after Kallo added a range of plant-based dips – Organic Chunky Tomato & Lentil; Organic Tomato & Olives; and Organic Spicy Tomato (rsp: £3/135g) – into Ocado in July.

This was followed by the addition of two organic granola variants – Three Nut Crunch and Superfruit Crunch (rsp: £3.99) – in October.
