Kellogg’s is kicking off a trial of entirely paper-based packs for its Corn Flakes brand.
The cereal giant will roll out packs with a new paper liner into a “small number” of Tesco stores in January, with the results “helping to shape Kellogg’s future packaging plans”.
Kellogg’s technologists had “worked to create paper-based inner packaging for its cereal that can survive the process of filling and sealing millions of bags in boxes of cereal produced in its factory and transporting them to retailers”, said the brand.
Plastic inner liners used en masse in the category are not currently widely accepted in kerbside recycling.
“Ultimately, we would prefer plastic liners to be accepted in home recycling as our data tells us that they are better for the planet over the full life-cycle of the packaging,” said Kellogg’s UK & Ireland MD Chris Silcock.
However “this trial ensures we have an alternative,” he said.
“We call on suppliers to test and roll out actions like this – using as little material as possible and making sure that necessary packaging is easy to recycle,” added Tesco grocery director David Beardmore.
The move is being touted as a an example of actions to come from Kellogg’s ‘Wellbeing Manifesto’ - an “action plan” launched by the company this year in a bid to improve its food and packaging “so that it’s better for people, the planet and the community”.
Indeed, the business has spent the past year slashing sugar and salt from its products and reformulating some as the government’s HFSS clampdown approaches.
For instance it announced plans in May to remove 10% of the sugar and at least 20% of the salt from its kids’ cereal range, making the range non-HFSS by the end of 2022.
It has also launched healthier NPD: October saw it roll out a trio of high-fiber, non-HFSS cereals under its Wheats brand.
