Kingsland Drinks is betting big on bag-in-box wines.
The Salford-based supplier is ploughing a six-figure sum into upping its production capabilities for bag-in-box by 50% – meaning it will be able to pack more than 28 million litres of wine in the format per year.
The project will see a new filler fitted in April, followed by a pick-and-place and end-of-line palletisation system, with the new production line expected to be fully operational by May 2021.
Bag-in-box sales have surged amid the pandemic, with sales up 25% over the year to 1 November 2020 alone [IRI].
“Bag-in-box wine is also more efficient to transport versus its bottled counterpart, resulting in a lower carbon footprint when transporting around the UK,” said Kingsland Drinks.
Kingsland MD Ed Baker added: “Many of our suppliers are keen to venture into new wine formats and bag-in-box is certainly one that is being embraced by consumers.”
This was “due to changes in lifestyle and the fact that at-home drinking occasions are set to be dominant feature of socialising”.
