Troubled discounter Kwik Save has acquired 45 stores from Somerfield for an undisclosed sum.

The chain, which has been hit by a series of problems this year, said that it had secured additional investment to finance the deal.

However, the group added that following the investment and restructure, its managing director Andrew Villars, who only took up the role in July, had left the company.

Commercial director David Birchall is currently acting as managing director.

The stores are situated across England, Scotland and Wales, and pushes the number of Kwik Save stores up to 229.

Kwik Save added: “This dynamic move highlights the desire by Kwik Save to grow the business as laid out by the company in February 2006 and secure this high street name for the future.”
