Finnish dairy Valio is to license processors worldwide to use its technology for producing lactose-free cows’ milk. The process is to be marketed globally in a joint venture between Valio and Tetra Pak.
Valio lactose-free milk has been on the market in Finland since 2001. The first lactose-free milk drink outside Finland produced using Valio’s technology was launched in Switzerland this year.Valio claimed its method removes lactose completely, leaving none of the slightly sweet taste inherent in low-lactose milks.
Michelle McKinley, nutrition
manager at the Dairy Council, said lactose intolerance was not common in the UK, with only 2% of people affected. “Even people with the condition do not need to remove dairy products from their diet.”
