It isn’t just beef producers who are getting a raw deal from multiple retailers, but sheep farmers too, it has been claimed.
According to the Farmers’ Union of Wales, lamb prices have collapsed in the past 12 months, even though retail prices have held firm.
FUW president Gareth Vaughan said: “The price received by farmers for lamb has plunged by 25% over the last year, although consumers would not know because there has been no change in the price paid at the shops.
“This is an absolute scandal. Farmers are getting less for their produce, while consumers are paying the same or even more in the shops.”
Data produced for the regular Market Edge Price Flash report shows that the average price of a leg of lamb in Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury and Morrisons was £5.99/kg on January 10 this year and £6.02/kg on September 26.
However, price fluctuations were recorded both upwards and downwards between those two dates.
