Dewlay Cheesemakers has launched a new heritage Lancashire cheese marketed as the perfect cheese for toasting.

The Leigh Toaster recipe was a favourite among Lancastrians but has not been available at retail for around 20 years. Made to a completely different recipe to Dewlay’s other Lancashire cheese, it has a soft texture and tangy finish, said sales and marketing manager Conor Daunt.

Dewlay anticipated the cheese would have “massive appeal” initially in Lancashire but potentially further afield as shoppers looked for provenance in their foods, added Daunt.

The 200g packs (rsp £1.60) went into six Asda stores near Leigh, Manchester, on Monday.
