German discount store Lidl is set to roll out stores in 15 European countries, according to media reports.
This should turn it into Europe’s biggest discount store, overtaking Aldi as the leading small format discount store operator in Europe by 2012.
Aldi is currently the biggest discount operator with a 9.4% share of the market, while Lidl holds 4.9%.
While both operators have been expanding quickly into areas of France and western Europe, Lidl has taken the bold decision to expand into the central and eastern European markets.
Lidl currently fares better than Aldi in France, Spain and Ireland. The operator is planning to be the first of the two to target Denmark, Hungary, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Croatia and Slovenia.
Both operators are targeting Switzerland and Norway, and Aldi is looking to expand away from Europe in Canada and New Zealand.
